2018 Goodreads Choice Award Winners: Have I Read Them?

2018goodreadswinners

The quick answer is, lol hardly. Out of the — Goodreads Choice Award Winners, I have read a total of –. It’s quite sad really, however I will say that I did read a lot of the nominees! Here are a list of the winners, whether or not I read them and who I voted for in their respective categories!

*Note: I didn’t vote in all categories as there were a few in which I had read nothing, so I will only be featuring the categories that I voted in.

Fiction

Winner: Still Me by Jojo Moyes | Have I Read It: Nope. | I Voted For: Us Against You by Fredrik Backman

Listen. I will vote for Fredrik Backman’s books no matter what category they’re in. Okay, yes…I’ve only read two…BUT they have both been 5 star reads! I’m also currently making my way through another book of his and I can safely say that he’s a new favourite author of mine. As for Still Me by Jojo Moyes, the actual winner in this category…I sadly have no interest in picking it up at all any time soon.

Mystery & Thriller

Winner: The Outsider by Stephen King| Have I Read It: Nope. | I Voted For: Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell

I believe it was Books & Lala who said that if Stephen King has a book in this category, he will win the category. Looks like she wasn’t wrong! While I haven’t read The Outsider yet, the premise does sound perfect for my reading tastes and I’m actually quite interested in picking it up! My vote, however, went to Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell. It was one of those thrillers where you know what the outcome is from the very start, but for some reason you still get pulled in. I know that wasn’t the case for all readers, but I really enjoy Lisa Jewell’s writing and will continue to pick up her books, and vote for them, in the future.

Fantasy

Winner: Circe by Madeline Miller | Have I Read It: Nope. | I Voted For: Beneath The Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire

I won’t lie, I hadn’t heard of Circe by Madeline Miller before this year’s Goodreads voting began. I’m still unsure of what it’s about, but I’m sure it’s great considering the votes that it received! My vote went to Beneath The Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire. This is the third book in the Wayward Children series which is a series that I’m enjoying a lot lately! Book 4 comes out soon and I absolutely cannot wait!

Best Of The Best

Winner: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas | Have I Read It: Yes! | I Voted For: All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

This was a pretty interesting category this year in which they basically pulled all of the past overall winners over the last 10 years and had them square off against each other! I did read the winner in this category (The Hate U Give), and honestly…I almost voted for it. This was one of the toughest categories for me and i ended up having to go with All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. There was just something about this book and how beautifully written and heartbreaking it was that stuck with me. The same thing goes for The Hate U Give honestly which was what made this such a tough choice.

Romance

Winner: The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang| Have I Read It: Yes, and I LOVED it. | I Voted For: The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

YAY! The first, and ONLY, category in which the book I voted for won! Listen. I don’t typically do romance. This is usually one of the categories that I skip over when it comes time to vote. This year, however, I actually read a few of them! The clear stand out winner for me though was The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang! This book got 5 stars out of me and omg did it ever deserve it. I think it’s time for a re-read real soon! I absolutely cannot wait for anything else Helen Hoang comes out with in the future!

Horror

Winner: Elevation by Stephen King | Have I Read It: Nope, but I really want to. | I Voted For: We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix

Elevation by Stephen King is one of those books that I didn’t know existed and then once I found out it existed, I absolutely wanted to read it. I had seen it on shelves, but never picked it up to see the synopsis. If I had known this was connected to Castle Rock sooner, I would have totally pre-ordered this! I did read and vote for We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix! I’ve recently discovered the satirical horror novels by Grady Hendrix and I absolutely love them! This was the only book I read in this category this year, but it totally deserved my vote!

Graphic Novels & Comics

Winner: Herding Cats by Sarah Andersen| Have I Read It: Nope. | I Voted For: The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang

Listen. The Prince & The Dressmaker by Jen Wang is one of the best graphic novels I have ever read. It’s such an important story and it deserves all the awards so please please please pick it up and give it a read! Nothing against Herding Cats but…

Debut Author

Winner: Children Of Blood & Bone by Tomi Adeyemi | Have I Read It: Nope. | I Voted For: The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

I know, I know. I need to get on that Children Of Blood & BOne train and I promise that I will very soon! Of course, my vote had to go to Helen Hoang. It’s not very often that I pick up a romance novel, love it and give it 5 stars, so she made a great impression on me this year with The Kiss Quotient! I can’t wait to read her next novel!

Young Adult Fiction

Winner: Leah On The Offbeat by Becky Albertalli | Have I Read It: Nope! | I Voted For: Sadie by Courtney Summers

Again, another winner that I probably should have read by now but for some reason, I have just neglected. I plan on reading it soon, but to be honest…I haven’t really heard too many great things about it. However, I absolutely LOVED Sadie by Courtney Summers. It was dark and gritty and it used one of my favourite storytelling techniques: podcasts! I highly recommend this one if you haven’t picked it up already as it got absolutely ROBBED.

Young Adult Fantasy

Winner: Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas | Have I Read It: Nope. | I Voted For: Thunderhead by Neal Shusterman

I have never read a single book in the Throne of Glass series and I 100% guarantee you I never will, so that’s that. I did however, absolutely DEVOUR Thunderhead, the second novel in the Arc of a Scythe series by Neal Shusterman. That ending though?! I need the next book NOW PLEASE.

And there you have it! All of the Goodreads Awards winners (in the categories that I’ve read and voted for) in comparison with the books that I actually voted for! How did the winners compare to your votes? Is there any book that I haven’t read in the list above that I absolutely should ASAP?

Thank you for reading!

  1. I read Still Me. I voted for it. It was a very fitting end for that series. I also read/voted for The Kiss Quotient for both of those categories. I’m happy it won at least one of them.

  2. Oh this is such a fun post, comparing your votes with the winners! I don’t read a lot of thrillers, but I totally agree with your thoughts on King winning if nominated. I voted for and LOVED both Circe and The Kiss Quotient.

  3. The fact that you picked up and loved a romance novel still blows me away hahahaha. I feel awful for saying this but I think there was about a maximum of 3 books I had actually read out of this year’s nominations, so I basically voted the ones of my tbr list haha.
