New Year, New Me: 2018 Reading Goals!

2018readinggoals

Well well well, it’s that time of year again where I set my reading goals for the upcoming year! A lot of these goals are similar to last year as I felt as though I didn’t really stick to what I set up for myself. I want to do better this year and I really hope that I am able to achieve these goals! Here’s to a wonderful 2018 full of everything bookish!

Try to use the library more often.

I recently started using the Overdrive app to check out books and audiobooks from my local library right to my phone/iPad and it’s been amazing. I don’t know why I never used this service before, but in a time where I’m trying to save as much money as possible for a vacation/moving out, Overdrive has been a lifesaver. I’m saving all kinds of money I would have been spending on new books, I’m supporting my local library and I’m not adding more books to my overflowing shelves. My number one goal is to use the library and Overdrive WAY more this year.

No more requesting/accepting ARCs unless a most anticipated read.

I have this habit of getting a little trigger happy when it comes to requesting ARCs, especially via NetGalley. This year, I want to make it a goal to keep my requesting, and accepting, to a minimum. If they come to me unsolicited that’s fine, but I’m only going to be requesting titles that I REALLY want to read this year. I already have a few lined up, so I don’t think I’ll be requesting anything new anytime soon!

Read more backlist titles.

As mentioned above, my shelves are already overflowing. A lot of the titles I own are now backlist titles that I just didn’t have time to get around to over the years. I think 2018 should be the year of catching up on old titles. I think this will also help me to get rid of a lot of the books that I don’t end up liking or just am not interested in anymore. I need to seriously make space for the books I love and cherish this year.

DNFing is okay.

This was a goal for me last year as well and I think I only ended up DNFing maybe 2-3 titles. I need to be better at this. I’m always so worried I’ll be hurting someone’s feelings or letting a publisher down when I DNF books, but this has to change. I need to be honest about the books that I’m reading and I need to be strategic in the way that I spend time reading. I can’t waste days/weeks at a time struggling to get through a book I’m not enjoying. 2018 will be the year of the DNF.

More original content.

I feel like my blog has been slacking a little lately. Maybe it was just the holiday season and me not reading as much for the past few weeks/month. I’m hoping to start posting some more original content this year, however I’m not going to be making it a priority. Writing original content takes time and energy, so I’ll definitely try my best to get some original content out when I’m in the mood to do so!

There you have it! All of my reading/bookish goals for 2018! What are your goals for this upcoming year?!

Thank you for reading!

  1. Totally agree with requesting ARC’s. Last year I tried to keep current with releases and try more genres – well that ended up pushing back books that I’ve been waiting for and they’re still sitting there unread. In 2018 I’m with you on being more picky about the books I request. Best of luck with reaching your goals in 2018!

    1. Right?! I feel like you just can’t win sometimes haha! You have to kind of dedicate a whole year to doing one thing! Especially when you’re a procrastinating/ADD reader like myself 😛

    1. Right?! The audiobooks on Overdrive saved my butt as well! I can’t wait to use the library and the app so much more this year!

  2. Great goals! Good luck with all of them this year! I would love to use the library more but considering the fact that most books don’t even make it to my bookstores I doubt I will get any of them from the library. My reading goals will go up next Friday, I’m doing a monthly TBR thing and I have a system which I hope will make me break out of the box. 😀

And yay for more original content!! 😀

    1. Thank you so much! 😀

Aw no, that sucks 😦 I feel like we definitely don’t appreciate the library enough here haha! I hope to change that this year! I can’t wait to see your reading goals! 😀

  3. I think a lot of people seem to be determined to get their TBR shelves down this month. I’ve created my own TBR241 challenge, when every 1 book I buy, I have to read/DNF/unhaul another 2 from my already owned books.

I just discovered Overdrive as well! I’m going to use it for as many audiobooks as possible over the year. I hope your goals go well!

    1. Ohh that sounds like a pretty great challenge to me! I think it would definitely help to shrink that TBR! 😛

Isn’t Overdrive blessed?! Can’t wait to take advantage of it this year! 😀

  4. Hi Maria! I just discovered your blog and wanted to say how much I like it! Love your content! I’ve also recently been using Overdrive quite often, and it has saved me so much money from purchasing books. A goal I have this year is also to accept less ARC’s from Netgalley. I tend to bite off more than I can chew. Haha. Good luck with your goals!

    1. Hello! Thank you so much that means so much to me! 😀

Isn’t Overdrive amazing?! I can’t wait to use it religiously this year! I can’t wait to knock some older titles of my TBR and save some money at the same time!

I’m going to try and steer clear of NetGalley this year and hopefully only use it for titles that I would read right away!

Good luck with your goals as well! 😀
