That One Time I Read A Bunch Of Issue #1s.

issue#1

Alright so, Comixology was having a sale on different comics from Image Comics, which also happens to be my favourite comic book publisher! I picked up 5 different first issues of different comics that intrigued me based on their covers or their synopses and I got down to reading! If you want to find out more of my thoughts on each of these issues, continue reading below!

violentlove_01-1

Violent Love #1 by Frank J. Barbiere & Victor Santos

Synopsis: Daisy Jane and Rock Bradley were two of the most notorious bank robbers in the American Southwest. And then they fell in love. Join FRANK J. BARBIERE (FIVE GHOSTS, The Revisionist) and VICTOR SANTOS (THE MICE TEMPLAR, Polar) for a pulp-infused criminal romance oozing with style and action! Double-sized debut issue!

Initial Thoughts: YES it takes place in the 80s!

Thoughts while reading: 1. Oh, it takes place in the 60s too! Dual timelines, I like! 2. focused on the backstory of the female lead this time around. Maybe issue two will focus on male lead? 3. A great introduction to a series. Consider me intrigued.

Have I read anything by this author before?: No.

Will I continue with the series?: Yes!

motorcrush_01-1

Motor Crush #1 by Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart & Babs Tarr

Synopsis: The team behind the critically acclaimed revamp of Batgirl returns with an exciting sci-fiction-adventure series! By day, Domino Swift competes for fame and fortune in a worldwide motorcycle racing league. By night, she cracks heads of rival gangs in brutal bike wars to gain possession of a rare, valuable contraband: an engine-boosting “machine narcotic” known as Crush.

Initial Thoughts: A female who races on a motorcycle…I’m in.

Thoughts while reading: 1. Domino is kick-ass, I love her. 2. Love the futuristic feel of this story, however, it doesn’t seem like an all-too-distant future. 3. Ah, so they have started racing for some sort of drug. 4. Said drug doesn’t seem to be very safe or controlled at all. 5. This first issue definitely leaves you wanting more!

Have I read anything by this author before?: No.

Will I continue with the series?: Yes!

extremity-cover

Extremity #1 by Daniel Warren Johnson & Mike Spicer

Synopsis: Thea dreams. Not of a better life, but of revenge on the clan that ruined her family. With ferocious battles between man, machines, and monsters ahead…who knows where her quest for vengeance will take her? Creator DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON (Space Mullet) and colorist MIKE SPICER present a bold new vision, where the beauty and imagination of Studio Ghibli meet the intensity of Mad Max, in this all-new Skybound Original.

Initial Thoughts: Seems epic, I’m ready!

Thoughts while reading: 1. This poor girl. 2. When the synopsis mentioned it was like Mad Max, they weren’t lying. 3. Thea is tough, but also a little damaged.

Have I read anything by this author before?: No.

Will I continue with the series?: Yes!

demonic_01-1

Demonic #1 by Christopher Sebela, Niko Walter & Dan Brown

Synopsis: Detective Scott Graves will do anything to protect his family… even bargain away his soul. Now, the only thing to fear isn’t New York’s worst criminals, but what’s already raging inside of him. After all, what’s the cost of your soul when it’s already damaged?

Initial Thoughts: The cover is intriguing and initially what pulled me in.

Thoughts while reading: 1. I’m confused and unsure of what is happening? 2. An old demon has come back to visit our main character. 3. They keep mentioning “Novo”, whatever that means. It doesn’t look like they’re going to explain any time soon. 4. Hmm, this one has been the most confusing so far.

Have I read anything by this author before?: No.

Will I continue with the series?: Unsure.

killorbekilled_01-1

Kill Or Be Killed #1 by Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips & Elizabeth Breitweiser

Synopsis: The bestselling team of ED BRUBAKER and SEAN PHILLIPS (THE FADE OUT, CRIMINAL, FATALE) launch their new monthly series: KILL OR BE KILLED, the twisted story of a young man who is forced to kill bad people, and how he struggles to keep his secret as it slowly ruins his life and the lives of his friends and loved ones. Both a thriller and a deconstruction of vigilantism, KILL OR BE KILLED is unlike anything BRUBAKER & PHILLIPS have ever done.

Initial Thoughts: I’ve read one story by this team before and it just wasn’t really for me. Hopefully this one is better!

Thoughts while reading: 1. The opening monologue is too real right now. 2. This is eerily similar to Demonic #1…but better? 3. Yeah, I really enjoyed this one a lot more than Demonic and it kind of has the same concept with a demon demanding a human to commit homicide.

Have I read anything by this author before?: Yes.

Will I continue with the series?: Yes.

There you have it! My opinion on five first issues of different Image comics! It was really fun to jump into different comic series that I have yet to read to see if I would find any new series I would enjoy! It looks like I found quite a few! I’m really eager to keep reading a few of these!

Thank you for reading!
