#Top10Tuesday: It’s A No From Me.

Top10Tuesday

It’s time for another Top 10 Tuesday!!! For those of you who don’t know, Top 10 Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the folks over at The Broke and the Bookish! Last week we talked about 10 Things That Make Us Read A Book Instantly! This week, in similar fashion, we are asked to talk about the 10 Things That Make Us NOT Want To Pick Up A Book. It was fun to compare and contrast what makes me want to pick up a book versus what makes me steer clear from picking one up. Let’s explore what it takes for me to not want to read a novel.

Enjoy!

Too Many Pages

I just get way too intimidated by books that have over 500 pages. I’m not the fastest reader and my attention span is terrible, therefore big books are my mortal enemy. However, I love big books that don’t feel like big books. You know, those ones that are just so good you don’t even realize how long they are as you breeze on through!

Cheesy Synopsis

I’m a cynic and cheesy synopses make my skin crawl. If I roll my eyes while reading the synopsis of a book, chances are I’ll be passing on it.

Problematic Reviews

Reviews are everything. When I see multiple reviews that all point out the same problematic aspect of a novel, it really turns me off from reading that book at all. When the majority notices something wrong, I’m sure it’s accurate and I should be spending my time on other reads.

Forced On Me

I HATE being pressured and I absolutely hate being pressured to read. I have always been an avid reader, but I remember even way back in elementary/high school days…when a teacher told us we had to read something, I never wanted to read it. I’ll get to it when I want to get to it.

High Fantasy

Unfortunately, this is just not the genre for me. I don’t mind a little bit of fantasy here and there, but as a mostly contemporary reader, fantasy just naturally isn’t my thing.

I’ve Already Seen The Adaptation

Sometimes, when I have already seen a movie or show that was based on a novel, it’s really hard for me to pick up that book. Maybe it’s because I already know what’s going to happen. That’s why I always try to read the book first!

Humans On The Cover

I hate cover models. They just make books seem so tacky to me..unless they’re done right that it. I love a good illustrated/graphic front cover, so when I see photographs of people on the cover I’m instantly turned off.

Bad Covers

I’m a graphic designer by day. That’s my argument on this one! I just can’t handle some covers…and believe me, there are a lot out there that are absolutely cringeworthy.

Over-Hyped

Sometimes too much hype can kill the novel for me. When everyone and their dog is reading the same book, I tend to steer clear and find something else to read. Once the hype dies down though, I’m ready to dive right in.

Harlequin Romances

Another genre that just isn’t for me. See above paragraphs describing cheesy synopses & humans on covers. No thank you.

There you have it! 10 Things The Will Make Me Not Want To Read A Book. Do we have anything in common? Let’s discuss!

Thank you for reading!

  1. I totally agree with Problematic Reviews! I have a passed on reading shelf for those books I’ve found too many reviews stating the same problem. I’m not up for a book that will make me scream and pull my hair. Also totally agree with ugly covers… if the publishing company doesn’t respect their book enough to give it a great cover how am I supposed to want to read it? A great list!

  2. OMG TWINS! I HATE humans on the cover, too! I am fine with illustrations, but I HATE actual photos. You would have to really convince me to read a book with a human on the cover- I agree, they’re just SO tacky. I’ve heard a bunch of good things about the Selection series, but NOPE, I hate those stupid effing covers, so I’m not doing it. XD

    1. Right?! There’s just something about it that is such a turn off. LOL that is one of the main reasons I haven’t picked up that series haha!!

  3. I definitely agree with you on the reviews pointing out a problematic aspect. The other side of that coin is multiple 5 star reviews on a book from a relatively unknown author that just *gush* about how awesome the book is. Almost every time I’ve tried one of those, I walk away from it thinking “Uhhh…did we read the same book? I don’t think we read the same book.”

    1. I never thought about it that way! That makes total sense haha! Too mant 5 star reviews for an unknown author by people gushing about it is a little suspicious haha

    1. Lucky! They just intimidate me because I know they’ll take me forever to get through haha

  4. I also have trouble wanting to read the book if I’ve already seen the movie. I feel like I already know the story, even if the book was better. I don’t like human on covers either! And I can’t stand romance or harlequin.
    I’m a slow reader as well 😊
